This week’s blog theme has been happiness; where do you deserve more and how can you get it? I’ve discussed how to deal with people who feel stuck in their position in work or school, how to abandon the idea of boredom, and questioned if Americans are spending enough time at one job to master it. When you’ve been searching for a job in your career for the last six months, it might be hard to have positive thoughts about your career choice. When you’ve been doing the same monotonous task for the last 3 years or have been struggling in a new job since your first day, it might be hard to feel happy about what you do for a living.

So, when do you know when you need to demand something more from your job and how do you move forward?

Assess: If you’ve been on the job search for a long time with no luck, maybe it’s time to open your mind to other options. What makes you happy? What is something you’ve always wanted to try? Should you go back to school? If you’ve been on the job for a short or long time without any joy, you could be in the wrong field or with the wrong company. Even in a tough job market, you can be searching for alternatives.

Expand: If you’ve been at the same job for a long time or are unhappy with the job you just entered, you can enhance your work life by choosing a second career. In the article, “Earnings and Yearnings: Meet the Slashers,” “slashers” share their insights on having a work life that’s split between two careers, like computer geek/comedian, corporate recruiter/water aerobics instructor, or PR coordinator/horror writer. Slashers have two careers so they can transition easily into another job, have a job to fall back on, and have a “diversified” portfolio.

Reinvent: What makes you happy? What doesn’t make you happy? How can you balance these out? Write down one goal you have to increase your happiness quotient and make one step toward making it a reality today.

The state of our economy may make you feel like you have more restraints than you’ve ever experienced. But there are still many options that can make you money and keep you happy. What can you do to have a happier outlook on your career? What is something you enjoy doing? Is there an opportunity for it to become a second career?

Many employees enter an entry level job with the intention of leaving the minute something better comes along and with an unrealistic idea of how long it will take for them to advance in their field. In the book “This is Your Brain on Music,” Daniel Levitin writes:

… ten thousand hours of practice is required to achieve the level of mastery associated with being a world-class expert — in anything. In study after study, of composers, basketball players, fiction writers, ice skaters, concert pianists, chess players, master criminals, and what have you, this number comes up again and again. Ten thousand hours is the equivalent to roughly three hours per day, or twenty hours per week, of practice over ten years. Of course, this doesn’t address why some people don’t seem to get anywhere when they practice, and why some people get more out of their practice sessions than others. But no one has yet found a case in which true world-class expertise was accomplished in less time. It seems that it takes the brain this long to assimilate all that it needs to know to achieve true mastery.

Entry-level employees and interns should be encouraged to develop mastery of their job before expecting to advance to something that holds more responsibility, commitment, and skill. An employee working 40 hour work days could master their job in 5 years, according to Levitin’s calculations. In these five years, as the employee learns the ropes they might be promoted or change companies, but they will be on a learning continuum that allows them to master every step before moving on.

Too many interns enter their internships with an unrealistic timeframe of how long it will take them to be in their dream position. Employees who set out to master their skill instead of set out to make money as fast as they can, not only have a more realistic perception of how the world works, but arguably gain more from their life experiences.

In Monday’s blog, I discussed the connection between what we think and what we do and how taking responsibility for our choices affects our happiness. Today we’ll look at the responsibility we have to assess our situation and alleviate boredom in our daily lives—a concept which many outside of America can’t relate to at all.

According to a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation report, fifty percent of high school dropouts said they dropped out because they were bored. Students who complain about being bored are telling their teachers and parents that they aren’t engaged. Complaining about boredom is a natural defense children use to tell people their brains need more of a challenge or they will atrophy, according to education expert Jenifer Fox.

Employees can experience the same brain drain in their everyday lives due to similarly “boring” situations. In the article, “Bosses Battle Bored Staff,” writer Hannah Martin compiles studies from a mix of psychologists and consultants on the top causes of boredom in the workplace and how employees and employers can battle it. Many employees may be overqualified for their job. When a job is a good fit, the employee should be comfortably challenged. If the employee isn’t challenged enough, they will get bored. If the employee is challenged too much, the challenge turns to stress and causes them to shut down.

If  students learn about self-advocacy at a young age,  they will  know they have a responsibility to make their own choices and seek help when they need it. If these 50 percent of dropouts knew they had resources to help them through their situational boredom, could the numbers drop? If workers knew they had the power to challenge themselves by finding a new job or talking to a supervisor, would they be happier?  If we can also develop new ways of teaching and learning that reflect dynamic, creative and stimulating learning environments then the intrinsic and extrinsic contributors to boredom can be removed. But, in the end, boredom is a choice just like curiosity and openness, for which we are each responsible.

Maybe they are there because students are encouraged to get good grades to earn diplomas or degrees so they can get a good job that will pay off their good education and the luxuries of their adult life. But are they encouraged to be “happy” or find their “well-being”?

In the New York Times article, “A New Gauge to See What’s Beyond Happiness,” former president of the American Psychological Association and founder of the positive psychological movement, Martin Seligman, talks about his new attitude about happiness. In hindsight, his 2002 best seller “Authentic Happiness” was flawed in the “limitations of the concept.” He found himself asking why people continued to go about their lives doing things that didn’t make them happy. Even he was guilty of pursuing the unfulfilling. For him, it was playing joyless games of bridge, which he continues to play to this day and even lead to him winning second place in the North American pairs championship.

In his new book, “Flourish,” he addresses the holes in his previous study and instead of continuing a search for happiness, starts a new search for well-being. “Well-being cannot exist just in your own head,” he writes. “Well-being is a combination of feeling good as well as actually having meaning, good relationships, and accomplishment.” He created the acronym Perma for the five elements that we need for our well-being: Positive emotion, Engagement (the feeling of being lost in a task), Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishment.

Maybe the employees and students who complain about their personal and professional life, who don’t have the spirit of curiosity, and who feel stagnant and therefore angry, scared, or cornered are without meaning and accomplishment and therefore can’t be positive, engaged, or develop relationships. They don’t realize they’re responsible for their own choices. As soon as they realize the power and responsibility they have to pave their own path, they can stop playing the role of victim. An employee or student who can embrace challenge accepts that they have choice to accept or change their situation. What are you choosing to think about and what are you choosing to do?

How can educators, parents, or people who work with kids teach them the power of choice while their brains are still forming? How can we teach the concept of choice and the connection between what you think and what you do?
