Students’ lack of college and career preparation takes on many forms beyond academic deficits.

It shows up with them not knowing what to expect from college, not knowing how to anticipate challenges and obstacles, and not having the grit and determination to succeed. It shows up with their lack of follow through skills, and their not knowing how to take advantage of resources to craft a college experience that will deliver the abilities and connections to launch a successful career.

Adams County is helping high school students make the connection between high school, college, and career with their program Experience 9 to 5. Students choose to explore a career, ranging from agriculture to health care to communications, and meet with professionals in their chosen field to see if it is the right fit for them. Professionals will provide students with hands-on experiences in the field, share the ins-and-outs of their career, and take any questions about how high school students can go from a high school graduate to a new professional.

This year LifeBound is excited to participate in this experience. We are looking forward to having as many as 10 high school students in our office learning more about the day-to-day work as a writer and publisher, including blogging, editing, networking, and brainstorming with a team. We will share the student blogs on the LifeBound website at the end of the session.

If we want higher high school graduation rates, college entrance rates, college completion rates, and employee success rates, it’s essential we start bridging the gap between education and the world of work for students before they get to college. Through a program like Experience 9 to 5 students will learn they found their path, they need to keep searching, or that they are more interested in another aspect of the same profession. We can’t wait to meet these career seeking students and help guide them toward any profession.

Learn more about Experience 9 to 5, and don’t miss the interviews of participating professionals speaking about how they got into the profession and what benefits students can get out of attending their session.

Internships were originally intended for students in the medical field. Doctors knew medical students needed hands-on experience working with patients before they were qualified to work on their own patients. Today, internships have spread beyond the medical field and become an important part of many jobseekers’ resumes in education, technology, writing, marketing, and more.

A recent graduate of a reputable medical school spent her last few years of school in multiple clinicals — a program similar to an internship that pairs students with mentors in the field — which gave her the opportunity to experience working with different age groups of patients, leadership styles, and company size. Entering the medical program she had a strong idea that she wanted to work with children; a decision that was solidified after working with a wide span of patients, from premature babies to geriatrics. Listening to her share her stories of obstacles and successes in the field is enough proof to know she learned more from her time in the field than she ever could from sitting in a classroom. This new grad has already landed a handful of promising interviews and has amazing references from faculty and mentors who can speak to her abilities.

Today, we see many new graduates entering the the job force without experience or direction. What if we expanded internships across the education system like we did across the fields? What if career experience became part of the K12 curriculum? Imagine if this career-based model were used more commonly with younger students and encouraged through their education. Middle school and high school students could work side-by-side with mentors in fields that interest them. Through gaining real-world experience, they could assess their strengths and weaknesses — Â a great first step for teenagers to prepare for a career. Their mentors could become references for college applications and college-level internships. Having an internship during school would become the norm for students and the value of the experience would soon show itself as it opened more doors for them.

The career path cannot start after college graduation. The bricks need to start being laid in grade school with programs like mentorships, internships, volunteering, and service learning. Young students don’t need to decide on a career to start preparing for the world of work. Any work experiences, good or bad, are critical for students searching for their place. What is the price of not preparing students with a career mindset? What is the price of sending underprepared college students into the working world without working knowledge?

We are entering the months of graduation, inspiring speeches and anxious and excited graduates. With college debt exceeding a trillion dollars last month, the cost of college outpacing credit card debt, and the unemployment rate among graduates at a sixty year high, many Americans are asking what this means in the short run and the long run for these students and for our economy. What we should also be asking is:  a) what responsibility do colleges have in doing a better job of delivering graduates who are both knowledgeable and capable in the professional world; and, b) what responsibility do those graduates have to get a clue before they start college about what the real world expects and demands of graduates? Let’s look at both of these areas.

Frank Bruni is right, the promise of college in America right now is, indeed, “imperiled”. However, it is not so much what an undergraduate decides to major in that matters. They could major in music, and if they have strong critical thinking skills, the ability to write, articulate themselves, and take risks to create experiences that are unique to who they are, they will have value in the world of work. It is the real world experience—through jobs, internships, working hard to overcome obstacles, connecting with students and people different from you,  learning a language, and experiencing a foreign culture—that prepare students most for life outside of college and success in the world of work. But while many colleges have Student Life Divisions, these realities are not made clear to undergraduates as they begin college.

Imagine starting a job with no sense of what is expected of you. Now, put yourself in the shoes of most undergraduates from community college students to the Ivy Leagues.  Many colleges don’t bother to make the connection the summer before starting college about what the real world expects of graduates and how their college education is connected to their success in both their professional and personal lives. This awareness surely impacts the decision of the lost or even aimless college students as well as those who think they know what they want to do. More colleges need to require entering freshmen to participate in a summer reading program, not about the classics, but about the world they will enter, the global issues that need to be solved, the skills that they will need to learn in college through their experiences outside of class as well as inside and, finally,  how their interests and strengths measure up to careers and fields that interest them. If colleges would do a better job of setting expectations for undergraduates about the real world and how they could use their personal initiative in college to prepare for it, we would have far fewer stressed out and depressed graduates and more who were self-aware, self-prepared, and able to create a challenging and rewarding future for themselves without mom and dad.

For a long time, universities have provided an education emphasizing largely analytical skills. This is great if you want to be a professor or researcher, but for the vast majority of college students they need both an analytical education in school and a practical education outside of school. Both have to happen simultaneously for a graduate to be successful. Colleges owe the American public this connection because our economic future and our role in the global world depend on it. Most importantly, grads coming out of college with huge college debt deserve this direct and honest reality as they launch their adult lives.

But it is not only the responsibility of the colleges to make this clear, though they are the entities paid the big bucks by many young, inexperienced students who take out large sums in loans and whose parents aid them while putting their own retirement funds at-risk. Undergraduates, especially entering college freshmen, need to take full responsibility for answering these questions:

1)Â Â Â Â Â Â How will college be different from high school or the world of work?

2)Â Â Â Â Â Â How much will I have to study, read, and take notes?

3)Â Â Â Â Â Â What are the expectations of me freshmen year, and every year thereafter?

4)Â Â Â Â Â Â How is my college learning related to success in the professional world?

5)Â Â Â Â Â Â What are my academic, emotional, and social strengths and weaknesses?

6)Â Â Â Â Â Â Who are the people who can most help me freshmen year?

7)Â Â Â Â Â Â What are my interests and how do those relate to careers and fields?

8)      What are my internship options during college? Where can I work each summer to get experience?

9)Â Â Â Â Â Â When I get ready to interview for a job the end of my senior year, what will I offer a prospective employer?

10)Â Â Â How will I build the skills now to show what I know and what I know how to do?

Test preparation and getting into college have become billion dollar businesses, but we’ve become so obsessed with getting into college that we’ve failed to spend much time at all thinking about what to do develop yourself for the professional world while you are in college. No matter what Ivy League school you attend, what you do there is still more important than the name of the school. And while there are many great connections to be made through alumni, no connection counts unless a student actually has the initiative to make the connection, ask the question, and build the relationship. This is just as true at a state school or a community college. My oldest brother, who is a Rhodes Scholar, graduated from the University of Arizona. He was awarded the Rhodes not because of where he went to school, but because of the unique experiences he sought while earning high grades for his “book” learning”. He worked as an intern at the Wall Street Journal in Philadelphia. Perhaps most remarkable, in the early seventies, he traveled for eight months through Mexico and South America traveling in train cargo cars, riding on the back of chicken trucks, scaling mountains in the Andes, and meeting the people who revealed their many cultures as only first-hand knowledge can be shared.

College freshmen need to ask themselves how they will develop their unique interests and passions, which requires that they spend some time reflecting on what make them passionate. It takes time and discipline to dig into one’s very soul for these answers and it is much easier to go to the next fraternity party than to sit with these questions. But the students who take the time to consider these deeper questions are the ones who will be Teflon coated in a job situation. The imagination, tenacity and persistence that it takes to explore and define these basic aspects of self is what makes people valuable and effective in the working world.

Let’s demand more of colleges and let’s demand more of entering college freshmen. Our future depends on it.

Over the last few years, Americans have become more familiar with change. Our president’s campaign was based on change; our economy took a change for the worst and is making small steps to recovery; many members of our friends and families changed or lost careers; technology continues to change how we communicate, learn, listen to music, fight disease, etc. All of these factors have created a new economy that will only continue to get further away from what we know today (65 percent of kids in grade school are predicted to have jobs that don’t exist yet.1)

How can new graduates meet the demands of our new economy when the skills they just learned in their (expensive) college years could be outdated in 10 years? In a study of 200,000 new hires, 46 percent of new hires failed within 18 months. Of those failed hires, 89 percent failed due to attitudinal reasons, the other 11 percent failed from lack of skill, according to Forbes2. What do these numbers show? New graduates and new hires can worry less about whether or not their college prepared them for the technical side of their jobs, and start working on their presentation, communication, uniqueness, and go-get-it-ness that will make them stand out from the crowd. A college education is not the end, it’s just the beginning. That’s why even if there is an upheaval in the work available in the new economy, educated professionals will be able to find employment because they learned how to learn, how to think critically, and how to adapt to different types of peers, presentations, authority figures, and demands.

The 54 percent of new hires who are succeeding at their new job are those who are choosing to look beyond the obvious and add something original to the company. They make themselves stand out as exceptional pieces of a team, they go beyond without being prompted to by a boss, and they bring an energy that shows they are present.

Not all college students get social or attitudinal training in their college that they need to succeed in their career. In fact, many successful professionals weren’t only students (more and more are even college dropouts), they also had paper routes, worked at the movie theater, or served slices of pizza in their youth. Real-world experience is how people learn to communicate with a boss, work with their peers, and handle clients.

Soon-to-be graduates can start working on conveying their unique abilities by taking time to answer questions about themselves, in relation to a company and in relation to their own personal and professional goals:

What are my unique interests and abilities?

What can I offer the company beyond the obvious?

How can I use this position to help me achieve my career goals?

How can this position help me personally?

What do I hope to find out about myself in this job?

What are three goals I have for the first year of employment?

Where do I want to be in five years?

What do I want to contribute?

Another way new graduates can prepare for a strong career launch is by doing a search for “most asked interview questions” or “most interesting/hard interview questions” and reviewing their answers. Students can learn about many expectations that they might not have experience with just through getting familiar with the kinds of questions employers ask.

Through answering these questions, students may even discover they have more experience than they thought they had by finding transferable skills learned in school and jobs as a youth. Endeavoring to grow, to learn, to embrace difficulty, and to over deliver are highly sought qualities which will never go out of style. Soul-searching and self-awareness characterize many of our greatest contributors in the world of work and, you, soon to be graduate, can be among them.

How do you get people interested in a lesson and how do you make the information stick, whether it is in classroom or a board room?

Consider what engages any audience, whether they’re educators, low-income students, or CEOs. As an educator, you need to know your audience and define what they need to know to better themselves academically, personally, or professionally. Chances are if you were to hold a professional development class for second-grade teachers and you chose to present on the lifespan of bumble bees in Venezuela, the teachers would not find your presentation key to advancement in their career. Why? The material doesn’t have relevance. Students demand the same customization and relevance in their lessons in order for information to make an impact. However, one lesson does not fit all. A topic’s “relevance” is defined differently by different student populations.

The Ariel Community Academy is a K-8 school in Chicago where 98 percent of the students are black, and almost 90 percent of students are from low-income families, according to the Edutopia story “Financial Literacy Makes School Relevant.” Educators at Ariel know that the most critical and relevant lessons for their students are those that give them skills to break the poverty cycle.  The school has outperformed its district since 2002, and since 2007 has outperformed the district and the entire state of Illinois. How? With a strong financial literacy curriculum that teaches students the critical thinking skills to make financial decisions and the vision to see themselves succeeding in the future, all in a real-world context.

The process is simple: know your audience, then show them the relevance between what you are teaching to the real-world, whether the connection is to the reality of today, tomorrow, or both. The mission of Ariel isn’t only to teach critical thinking skills for the real-world, they also know they have to give their students the “courage and confidence” so they are inspired to dream big.

Not all students will have the opportunity to learn real-world skills in the class, but teachers and parents can foster learning environments which promote experiences outside of school. Some ideas include exposing students to real-world  situations by getting them interested in non-fiction reading (now a Common Core requirement in most states), service learning/volunteering, and after school programs that connect them with community members, professionals, and career training. How can you help a student you know to find meaning through a real life connection, experience or example?  How have you inspired a student to dream big? How can you inspire yourself to dream big and become a role model for a young person you know?
